Employment Background Checks
RED FLAGS
What to look out for when reviewing resumes.
What to look out for when reviewing resumes.
Pre Employment Screening is important to hiring managers to help ensure that only the best possible candidates are offered employment within their companies. Looking at a criminal records is not enough, there are other factors that can contribute to the decision making process.
1. Inconsistencies in the Resume
Hiring mangers should look for inconsistencies when reading through a resume. Matching information on a comprehensive background check against a resume can help assist in spotting inconsistencies which can include fake education credentials, previous employment dates, etc. Inconsistencies such as this could be an indicator that the candidate has something to hide. Candidates should be given an opportunity to explain those inconsistencies.
2. Criminal Records
Criminal record reports are an essential part of the employment background check process providing insight into the candidate's character and can help businesses avoid future workplace violence & other criminal activities. If the candidate was asked about criminal history and omitted some information that shows up on the criminal record report, that should be considered a red flag.
3. Credit History
Credit reports are especially important to hiring managers hining for positions in accounting, finance or anyone that will be handling cash. A good credit history can be an indicator of a responsible person while a bad credit history could indicate someone in fnancial distress that may be irresponsible when handling company money or finances. Many employers choose to run credit checks on all applicants to help get insight into their charater, even if they don't work in finance, accounting or with cash.
4. Reference Checks
It is important for employers to make reference check calls to hear what co-workers and former employers may have to say about the candidate and help give insight into their character. AAA Credit Screening Services would be happy to make reference check calls on your behalf.
5. Prior Address Checks
Address checks can provide AAACSS with previous addresses for the candidate in question allowing for more extensive criminal background checks. Some candidates have been known to omit addresses in an effort to avoid criminal records being run in a jurisdiction where they have a criminal record.
6. Degree Verification & Credential Verification
Only about 25% of employers run background checks and candidates that know that may embellish their degrees or qualifications to obtain better jobs. Running degree verification or credential verification reports will confirm if that candidate really does have the education and qualifications that they claim to have.
7. Driving Records
It is essential to run driving record reports on employees if they are being considered for a position operating company vehicles. It may also be important for other positions as it is an indicator of the candidate's sense of responsibiliy. Multiple tickets, failure to pay those tickets, accidents, etc. could be a sign of an irresponsible person and that behavior could be reflected in the workplace.
These are just some indicators that employers should look at when considering a candidate for employment. If you have any questions or need help deciphering your report, please feel free to contact our knowledgeable staff and they would be happy to assist you.
